Crescent Investigations started as a one-man operation in 1992 by Dean Mikel after serving as a Special Agent with the U.S. State Department. Mikel brought extensive industry knowledge to SE Minnesota. He quickly built a positive reputation amongst attorneys and municipalities in the area leading the business’s steady growth.
Today, Crescent is owned and operated by Bill Sires with Mikel remaining on the team as an investigator and consultant in his semi-retirement. While Sires leads the team, Crescent operates as a team with several highly-qualified investigators. Each brings a unique background and skill set to our service offerings.

Our Team of Minnesota Based Investigators
Bill Sires has been a part of Crescent for over 20 years. Sires served as a Trooper for the Minnesota State Patrol and also served as an Interim Chief of Police and Chief Deputy Sheriff during his time with the police force. During this time he simultaneously conducted investigative work with Mikel.
Sires operates the business out of the rural Rochester, MN area, giving him great proximity to the Mayo Clinic and attorneys across not only MN, but Northern Iowa, and the LaCrosse region of Western Wisconsin.
Heath Dienger brings over 20 years of investigative experience to the Crescent team. As a Lieutenant with the Minnesota State Patrol, his extensive experience in criminal and background investigations makes him a valuable team member that we can always count on to produce comprehensive investigations.
Mark Holm has conducted and supervised both criminal investigations and background investigations throughout his 35-year career in law enforcement. He also supervised all aspects of law enforcement field training. This background has led him keen attention to detail and experience in a vast array of investigative scenarios — he’s seen it all.
Dan Holmes is the region's most qualified Reconstructionist. With over 170 serious and fatal crashes in his portfolio, he’s been recognized numerous times for his work in the field during his time with the Minnesota State Patrol. Beyond his personal portfolio, he’s peer-reviewed 100+ cases of other Reconstructionists. Crash Reconstruction is a service that sets us apart, and we’re thankful to have the best on our team with Holmes.
Kara Schmidt-Pischke is a Minnesota State Trooper, Certified Crash Reconstructionist, and Forensic Map Specialist. With an FFA Part 107 UAS (Drone) Pilot’s Certificate, she brings state-of-the-art photography and videography to scene reviews. Her background suits our team well when it comes to personal injury investigations.
Brian Bartholmey is a retired FBI Special Agent. With extensive experience in fraud investigations, Bartholmey primarily acts as a consultant to the Crescent team in his retirement but has also investigated numerous cases on our behalf over the years.
